■Today's Words■　－数字－

○point　：　小数点

『Can you say “3.14”in English? 』－『Well, three point one four. Is it correct?』
「この数字“3.14”って英語で言える？」－「えーと、3.14。あってるかな？」

○thousand　：　１０００、１０００の位

『Wow! That's Mt.Fuji, isn't it? It looks so beautiful! How high is it?』－『Mm, It's about“twelve thousand four hundred”feet.』
「わぁ、あれって富士山だよね？すごくキレイ！
　高さはどれぐらい？」－「えーと、12,400フィートぐらいだね。」

○population　：　人口

『How big is the population of Tokyo?』－『I think it's about three times as big as L.A.』
「東京の人口ってどのくらい？」－「ＬＡの３倍くらいじゃないかな。」


■Break Time■　－数字－

慣れていなければ、大きな数字を英語で表現するのは、なかなか難しいですよね。そんな時は数字にある３桁ごとのカンマに着目すると非常に読みやすくなるんです。
本日の単語でも「1000」の位の単語をご紹介しましたが、他には
　　　「1,000,000」＝『million』
　　　「1,000,000,000」＝『billion』
　　　「1,000,000,000,000」＝『trillion』
となります。例えば「123,456,789」を英語で表現すると、
『one hundred twenty three million four hundred fifty six thousand seven hundred eighty nine』となりますね。
